Rohan's White Fang Book Report
Eat or be eaten, that is the rule of the wild and what keeps everything and everyone alive and alert. This is the very emotional book White Fang by Jack London (introduction by K.A. Applegate). The main character in this book is White Fang, a half wolf, half dog who never learns the way of love and friendship until the end of the book when he meets his final master. Another character is Kiche, a dog and the mother of White Fang. One Eye is exactly what his name says, he is a one-eyed wolf and the father of White Fang. Some of White Fang’s enemies are Lip Lip and his gang of dogs who haunt him everywhere he goes, and all the other dogs he fought. Some other characters were all of his owners: Gray Beaver, Beauty Smith and Weedon Scott.
The book starts out with two men and a group of sleigh dogs being pursued by a pack of starving wolves. Each night a dog is captured, killed and then eaten by the wolves. Eventually one of the men goes out and tries to save his dog and kill the other wolves. He is then killed and eaten by the wolves. The only man left gets very scared and can’t go anywhere without the protection of his campfire. He slowly builds his campfire from tree to tree until some men from the town the two men were trying to get to scare the wolves and bring him to safety.
After this, Kiche, who was part of the pack leaves with three suitors: One Eye, a three year old wolf, and another full grown wolf. The young wolf and One Eye get into a fight and then the three year old is killed. One Eye then kills the other wolf and goes away with Kiche. Later Kiche has a litter of five cubs. Only one survives and that is White Fang.
White Fang learns the way of the wild and meets a strange creature that even his fearless mom bows down to, the human. White Fangs master now becomes Gray Beaver. At first he is bullied by Lip Lip and his gang but White Fang grows strong and slaughters the enemy.
Later, White Fang is bought by Beauty Smith who gives him intense beatings and little food. He is forced to fight and fight with other dogs to make money for Beauty Smith. In one particular fight he fights a big bulldog, a type of dog White Fang has never fought before. The dog knocks him to the ground and tries to bite his neck. The dog is too big though so he slowly gets closer and closer to White Fang’s neck by adjusting his mouth position. Then to the rescue comes Weedon Scott who frees White Fang and takes him away.
This is how White Fang learns love. Weedon Scott takes care of White Fang and shows him a new aspect of life that he didn’t understand at first. When Weedon Scott smacked him it hurt him emotionally unlike the beatings he received from Beauty Smith which only hurt him on the outside.
Later, a mad serial killer gets loose and tries to kill Weedon’s dad who had sent him to jail. White Fang kills this man but was shot three times. He was sent to the doctor and given the finest treatment possible. He did finally learn to walk and then goes outside to live his normal life.
I would rate this book eleven stars out of ten. It was a genius story that only a true master could write. I learned that you can never give up because Weedon Scott never gave up on White Fang. I would also give the advice that you should treat others the way you want to be treated because Beauty Smith was mean so people didn’t like him.
