Solveig's Sanctuary

Solveig is derived from the Old Norse elements sól "sun" and veig "strength". Solveig is a central character in the play Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen and she sings the famous "Solveig's Song." Cecilie had been thinking about the name Solveig when Mike approached her with the same name. Mike had listened to Ibsen's "Solveig's Song" on the train ride home and felt that this would be the perfect Norwegian name if we had a girl.

Saga of a Haircut - Part One

In the beginning, Solveig had a real haircut, from a trained professional.

But like all females, she was not pleased, and 20 minutes later took matters into her own hands with a few sharp clips of the unattended scissors.

Torben was sure he could improve upon Solveig's amateur work, so a week or so later he found the only sharp pair of children's scissors ever made and gave her a funky, layered look, a la Cindi Lauper. It was completely shorn on one side, layered around the top, with a few long strands left in for good measure.

They were well pleased with the result.
